CHU Launches TA Training Programme to Support Holistic English Teaching and Learning Environment

Chung Hua University (CHU), in partnership with English Total Immersion (ETI), has launched a dynamic new Teaching Assistant (TA) training programme as part of its ongoing commitment to creating a holistic English language learning environment. The initiative aligns with CHU’s broader educational mission of equipping students with the skills, confidence, and real-world experiences they need to thrive in both academic and professional settings.

Designed with both language support and student engagement in mind, the TA programme trains selected assistants across several essential areas of classroom practice. These include techniques for encouraging student language production, effective administration of group tasks, classroom management, and classroom administration. The training also extends beyond the classroom, with TAs gaining hands-on experience in supporting the organisation of local and international conferences, helping coordinate student-led social events, and promoting participation in university-wide competitions such as the Time Lapse Challenge and the Hotel Marketing Contest.

By taking on these active roles, TAs not only develop their own English proficiency and leadership skills, but also contribute directly to the creation of an immersive, English-rich campus culture. This environment helps students engage with the language in meaningful, practical contexts that extend well beyond traditional coursework.

"The TA programme is an important part of how we support both academic and personal growth in our students," said Steven Murray, Course Director at English Total Immersion. "By equipping TAs with skills in language support, classroom dynamics, and event coordination, we’re building a vibrant learning ecosystem where English becomes a living language, not just something studied for exams. When students see their peers taking the lead in these spaces, it motivates them to step forward as well. That kind of peer-driven engagement is where real progress happens."

Through its integration of academic, social, and professional development opportunities, the TA programme plays a crucial role in advancing CHU’s vision for holistic, learner-centered education. With the support of their peers, students are not only more engaged but also more likely to achieve meaningful outcomes in both their English development, wider university life and future working careers.
