High School Teacher Training

Programme Outline - High School

CHU-accredited trainers, in collaboration with ETI, delivered a series of three CERT PT-aligned training programmes for 42 elementary school teachers, with each cohort made up of around 14 participants. The course explored how to make subject learning more engaging and effective using CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) and the SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) model. Participants built a strong foundation in the relationship between CLIL and second language acquisition (SLA), applied the 4Cs framework to plan differentiated lessons, and learned how to integrate language and content through interactive methods such as jigsaw reading, task-based learning, and STEM-based activities. Through model lessons, team challenges, and structured reflection, teachers gained practical strategies for making academic content more accessible while developing students’ language skills. Each session encouraged collaboration, experimentation, and growth, empowering teachers to design and deliver meaningful lessons that supported both language and content learning in diverse classrooms.

Benefits for Trainers

It is important for CHU and ETI trainers to deliver training courses to teachers across different levels of the education sector because it helps ensure a shared understanding of effective EMI and CLIL practices from junior high through to university. By working directly with school-level educators, trainers gain a clearer picture of the progression of learners’ language and content skills and can adapt training approaches to suit varying classroom realities. This cross-sector collaboration also promotes consistency in teaching strategies, bridges the gap between secondary and tertiary education, and supports smoother student transitions. Most importantly, it highlights that quality EMI teaching begins long before students reach university and that building a strong foundation at every stage is key to long-term success.

The Importance of Bilingualism

Bilingualism plays a crucial role in expanding students' academic and professional opportunities, and training programmes like this directly support its development by equipping teachers with practical strategies to integrate both content and language in meaningful ways. By modelling approaches such as CLIL and SIOP, these programmes empower teachers to create rich, bilingual learning environments where students can build subject knowledge and language proficiency simultaneously. This is especially important in the Taiwanese context, where students are expected to study academic subjects through English at university. Preparing students early through bilingual lessons in junior high and high school—not only builds their confidence but also ensures they are better equipped to thrive in EMI university programmes. Through these targeted training sessions, CHU and ETI play a vital role in laying the groundwork for a more successful bilingual generation of learners.
